American Roulette

The French Roulette was bought to America in the 18th Century, it was changed into American Roulette as it gave the house a higher percentage when using two zeros and not one. It became extremely fashionable in New Orleans; which used to be the gambling capital of the South of the USA and gained a lot of interest in gambling establishments and also along the local gamblers.

American Roulette is now favoured throughout the USA, South America and the Caribbean. This version of the game has 38 compartments; two being ‘0’ and ‘00’. The numbers are in a different order than the other versions of this game. The American version, with a wheel situated at one end is now used in majority of casinos around the world. This game is actually faster than the other Roulettes because there are two zeros. You have a choice to play with either traditional chips or personalized chips, with 1 to 8 fellow players. Spoken announcements are not allowed in American Roulette, so you have to get involved by placing your own bets onto the table layout. The croupier will spin the wheel until is is about to make its two last turns and announces, ‘no more bets’. The bets on the first 18 numbers or the last 18 numbers is called ‘Manque’ and ‘Passe’ in this roulette game. There are an assortment of betting options within Roulette; ‘Inside bets’, are placed by choosing the number of the compartment the ball will drop in to. ‘Outside bets’ are based on pocket colour, or if the number will be odd or even. There is also another even-money bet which is deciding whether the ball will drop between the numbers of 1- 18 or 19-36; the first 18, or the last 18 numbers. ‘Outside bets’ will always lose when the ball drops onto a ‘0’ or ‘00’, this means the house will win the round. The ‘inside bets’ have a payout of 35 to 1, so the house is still more likely to win. The payout is based on the probability of each option. Bets can continue until the croupier announces, ‘no more bets’ or ‘rien ne va plus’. American Roulette is the only Roulette in which you can place a ‘five number bet’. This consists of betting on two zeros and three numbers. A player is also allowed to ‘split’ their bet on two adjoining squares, this means that the payoff will be dropped to half. The house payoff differentiates between the different types of bets that are placed.

The marker that points to the winning compartment on the Roulette table is also knows as a ‘dolly’, this is a very important part for the croupier to pay. At no time is any player allowed to take, place or collect bets from the table. The croupier will pay all of the winning bets and eliminate all of the bets that were lost. When the dolly is removed, this is when the game can be reset. The bets can be collected from the round, the winners bets can either be left on the table and re-bet on or they can be removed from the table altogether.
